RSU Celebrates International Women’s Day, Reaffirms Commitment to Gender Equity

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi

Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, joined the global community on Sunday, March 8, 2026, to commemorate International Women’s Day with a renewed commitment to gender equity, inclusivity, and the advancement of women within the academic community.

In a message to mark the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi, emphasized that the true progress of the university is not solely defined by its physical infrastructure or academic output but by the depth of its inclusivity and the opportunities created for women within the institution.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the growth and development of Rivers State University remain inseparable from the advancement and empowerment of its female staff and students. He noted that the university continues to recognize the indispensable contributions of women across its academic, research, and administrative structures.

Professor Zeb-Obipi explained that the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration is marked by two major global themes. The United Nations announced the theme as “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” which focuses on dismantling barriers to equality and ensuring that women and girls have access to their fundamental rights. At the same time, the corporate and general campaign theme for the year is “Give to Gain,” which highlights the importance of reciprocity, investment, and collaboration in driving gender equality.

The Vice-Chancellor observed that both themes complement each other, stressing that granting women and girls their rights and ensuring justice through meaningful action ultimately benefits everyone in society. He said the university has embraced both themes as guiding principles in its approach to gender inclusion in 2026.

Reflecting on the contributions of women within the institution, Professor Zeb-Obipi celebrated what he described as the “RSU Woman,” acknowledging the vital roles played by women across different sectors of the university community. He noted that female academics are actively contributing to scientific discoveries in laboratories, female lecturers are shaping the minds of the next generation in lecture halls, and female administrative staff are providing the essential services that keep the university running efficiently.

He recalled that upon assuming office as Vice-Chancellor in March 2025, he made a commitment that gender equity would not merely be a footnote in the university’s strategic agenda but would stand as a headline priority for his administration.

One year into his leadership, he stated that the university is moving beyond rhetoric to tangible progress. He disclosed that the institution has recorded, for the upteenth time in its history, a significant number of women occupying leadership positions across key faculties, departments, and committees. According to him, these women have continued to demonstrate a leadership style that combines empathy with efficiency, contributing significantly to institutional growth.

The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the growing impact of female researchers at the university. He revealed that within the past year alone, female academics accounted for a considerable percentage of the funding secured for institution-based research projects and academic conferences.

He further noted that several female scholars within the university community have recorded remarkable academic achievements globally, setting new standards in their respective fields. Among these milestones, he pointed out that the university recently announced what is believed to be the first Professor of Social Work and Environmental Sustainability in the world, a position currently held by a female academic.

Professor Zeb-Obipi added that the university has taken deliberate steps to strengthen its internal policies in order to create a safer and more empowering environment for female students. He explained that the institution reviewed its Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy in the past year to allow for stronger gender mainstreaming, with the aim of ensuring that every female student feels protected, respected, and empowered to speak out without fear.

Despite these achievements, the Vice-Chancellor cautioned that the university cannot rely solely on past accomplishments if it intends to accelerate progress in gender inclusion.

He assured the women of Rivers State University that his administration remains committed to widening opportunities and expanding platforms for their advancement. According to him, the university is ready to continue supporting innovative ideas and trailblazing research led by female scholars, ensuring that women are not only present in decision-making spaces but are also equipped with the resources needed to lead meaningful conversations and drive transformation.

Addressing female students in particular, Professor Zeb-Obipi encouraged them to see the university as a space where there are no ceilings they cannot break. He reminded them that their gender should never be seen as a barrier but rather as a source of strength, resilience, and unique perspective capable of shaping society.

He urged them to embrace the spirit of the 2026 theme by investing in one another, collaborating across disciplines, and fostering a culture of reciprocity that benefits the entire academic community.

The Vice-Chancellor also called on male members of the university community to play an active role in advancing gender equality. He stressed that genuine progress can only be achieved when men act as allies and recognize that the success of women ultimately strengthens the entire institution.

Professor Zeb-Obipi concluded by expressing appreciation to the women of Rivers State University, including mothers, sisters, daughters, and colleagues whose dedication and contributions continue to make the institution a beacon of excellence in the Niger Delta and beyond.

He wished all women within the university community a memorable International Women’s Day celebration while reiterating the institution’s ongoing commitment to building an inclusive academic environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
