RSU Sets Stage for 2026 Staff and Students Sports Competition

Rivers State University (RSU) is set to host its 2026 Staff and Students Sports Competition, in what promises to be a celebration of fitness, teamwork, unity and institutional spirit across the University community.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University has constituted a committee to coordinate preparations for the competition, which is expected to bring together staff and students from the various Faculties, administrative units, Centres, Institutes and Directorates of the University.

Beyond the competitive aspect, the sporting event is designed to promote wellness, encourage active participation, foster networking and strengthen the bond among members of the University community.

The preliminary and elimination rounds are scheduled to commence on 19 October 2026 and continue through November 2026.

The main competition will take place from 7 to 11 December 2026, with the Opening Ceremony scheduled for Monday, 7 December, and the Closing Ceremony and Final set for Friday, 11 December 2026.

The competition will provide an opportunity for members of the University community to step away from their routine academic and administrative responsibilities and engage in healthy competition, teamwork and recreation.

All Faculties will be represented in the competition. For administrative convenience, some University units will be grouped together to participate as Faculties.

The Senate Category  will comprise the Registry Department, Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Council Affairs and the Senator Francis Ellah Administrative Building.

Centres and Institutes will form another Category, with the Business School included in the grouping. The College of Basic Medical Sciences will participate alongside Health Services Department, while the Faculty of Education will have the University Library added to its grouping.

Other units, including Estate and Works, the Postgraduate School and Security, will each participate as separate Categories. Staff School and ISS will also participate as one category.

The arrangement is expected to ensure broad representation and participation across the University's various establishments.

As preparations gather pace, specific venues have been designated for some of the sporting events. The Amphitheatre will serve as the venue for indoor games, while Hostel D will accommodate table tennis and volleyball.

Other venues will be announced as equipment and facilities become available.

The organisers are expected to provide further details on the sporting categories, fixtures and venues as preparations progress.

In keeping with the University's emphasis on participation and community engagement, participants will receive Certificates of Participation. 

The event is therefore expected to go beyond winning medals and trophies, with participation itself serving as an important part of building camaraderie and institutional identity.

The 2026 sporting calendar will also see RSU looking beyond the University community, with plans to participate in external sporting engagements.

The University is expected to participate in the West African Games scheduled for October 2026, as well as the National Universities Games Association (NUGA) Games scheduled for November 2026.

These engagements will provide opportunities for RSU athletes to compete beyond the University and further represent the institution on wider sporting platforms.

For Rivers State University, the 2026 Staff and Students Sports Competition represents more than a series of sporting contests. It is an opportunity to bring together people from different Faculties, departments, centres and administrative units in an atmosphere of friendship and healthy competition.

With preparations expected to intensify from October, attention will turn to participation, team formation and the sporting contests that will ultimately lead to the main competition in December.
