Bille Kingdom in Crisis: Women’s Protest Highlights Urgent Need for Security

In a poignant display of desperation and determination, women from Bille Kingdom in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State took to the streets to protest the alarming rise in pirate attacks and kidnappings along their waterways. The peaceful demonstration, which converged at the Rivers State Government House, sent a clear message to the government: act now to restore security and protect lives.

*A Community in Fear*

The protest follows a string of violent incidents that have left residents traumatized and water transportation — the lifeline of Bille — paralyzed. On April 6, 2025, six travelers were abducted near the New Calabar River while heading to Port Harcourt. After 12 days in captivity, they were freed after a ransom of ₦28 million was paid. Barely a month later, on May 6, 13 more passengers, including WAEC students, were kidnapped along the same waterways. The victims remain in captivity, and the community is anxiously awaiting their safe release.

Carrying placards with messages like "End Sea Piracy" and "Sole Administrator, Hear Our Cry," the women of Bille Kingdom appealed to Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Retired), the Rivers State Sole Administrator, to deploy concrete security measures to safeguard lives and restore safety in the region's maritime routes. Their determination was palpable as they chanted slogans and marched through the streets, demanding action from the government.

The women’s protest is a wake-up call to the government to prioritize the security of lives and property in Bille Kingdom and beyond. The repeated attacks have not only instilled fear among residents but also disrupted economic activities, with many businesses struggling to stay afloat. Despite the payment of a substantial ransom last month, the kidnappers seem emboldened, and the attacks continue.
