NUJ Rivers State Council Urges Journalists to Report Responsibly

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, has called on journalists to prioritize responsible reporting, emphasizing the importance of peace and public interest. This appeal was made by the State Chairman of NUJ Rivers Council, Comrade Paul Bazia-Nsaneh, during a courtesy visit from members of the League of Character Clubs International at the Ernest Ikoli Press center in Port Harcourt.


*The NUJ's Stance*


Comrade Bazia-Nsaneh stressed the need for journalists to avoid sensationalism and exercise caution in their choice of words, highlighting the NUJ's commitment to promoting media coverage that contributes positively to the unity of the state. He emphasized that the NUJ would do everything within its power to ensure peace prevails in Rivers State.


*A Call for Responsible Journalism*


The NUJ Chairman urged journalists to report in the interest of peace, advocating for a media landscape that fosters understanding and cooperation rather than escalating tensions. This stance aligns with the ethical codes of journalism, which emphasize truth, accuracy, and fairness.


*League of Character Clubs International Visit*


The President General of the League of Character Clubs International, Dr. Christian Kokoriko, commended the NUJ Rivers State Council's leadership for its "good and quality leadership." He praised the Council's handling of issues involving the Police and some of its members, noting that their actions demonstrated the power of responsible journalism.


*Upcoming Sports Event*


During the visit, Dr. Kokoriko also announced the League's forthcoming sports event, including the finals of the Dr. Abiye Briggs Cup on May 30, 2025. He invited all journalists in the state to attend and encouraged sports enthusiasts to participate in the various competitions.


*Awards and Recognition*


The highlight of the visit was the presentation of a Humanitarian Service Award to the NUJ Rivers State Council, and the decoration of the Chairman and his executive with character brooches.
