Amaechi Slams Nigerians: 'Citizens Hang Around Politicians to Steal'
Former Rivers State Governor and Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, has sparked controversy by blasting Nigerians for their role in the country's slow progress. According to Amaechi, citizens are to blame for the nation's woes because they flock to politicians in power to steal money.
Speaking at a lecture marking his 60th birthday, Amaechi expressed frustration and shame over Nigeria's lack of progress. "Nigerian leaders and elites are not the problem. The problem of Nigeria is the followership," he said. "When people say Nigeria is a capitalist country—there are no capitalists in Nigeria. Capitalists are those with the money to invest in production. Do we produce here? Everybody relies on oil."
Amaechi lamented that once someone becomes president, people from all walks of life converge to have a hand in stealing. "Once you become president, you will not know Christians from Muslims. They are all coming towards you to have a hand in the stealing. I look at Nigeria and ask myself, what are we actually doing here? Do we want to be a country?" he questioned.
The former minister's comments come barely two years after he left office as Minister of Transport. Amaechi has been a career politician with over two decades of experience in the corridors of power. He recently revealed that he is joining forces with other opposition politicians to oust President Bola Tinubu from office, citing hunger as a motivating factor .
Amaechi's statements have reignited debates about the role of citizens in Nigeria's development. Some may argue that the system is designed to perpetuate corruption, while others may agree with Amaechi that citizens have a responsibility to demand better leadership. As the conversation continues, one thing is clear: Nigeria's future hangs in the balance, and it's up to its citizens to shape it .
