Rivers State University (RSU), under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, recently showcased its commitment to acknowledging the dedication and service of its staff by hosting the inaugural Annual Retirees Send-Forth Ceremony. The event, held at the University's Convocation Arena, paid tribute to 74 staff members who have devoted their careers to the institution.
The ceremony was a poignant occasion marked by emotions, gratitude, and reflections on decades of commitment and impact. The retirees comprised 11 teaching staff, 51 senior non-teaching staff, and 12 junior non-teaching staff.
Prof. Zeb-Obipi, in his goodwill address, lauded the retirees for their years of loyalty and commitment, describing them as the "foundations upon which RSU continues to stand strong." He urged them to view retirement as a new beginning, exploring fresh opportunities such as farming, book writing, volunteering, and community service. Prof. Zeb-Obipi assured that RSU would consider re-engaging strong and willing retirees on contract, subject to government approval, while emphasizing the need to fill the voids left by their departure.
A significant highlight of the event was the launch of the RSU Retiree Directory, designed to sustain connection between the institution and its former staff. A dedicated desk officer has been appointed to maintain contact with retirees, particularly during festive seasons and special occasions.
Prof. Nlerum S. Okogbule, former Vice-Chancellor of RSU and Chairman of the occasion, commended the initiative as a noble tradition worth sustaining. Mr. Ebenezer Oladimeji, Area Manager, Industrial Training Fund (ITF), delivered a thought-provoking lecture on "Living and Thriving in Retirement," advising retirees to maintain healthy lifestyles, engage in productive ventures, and stay socially connected.
Representing the retirees, Prof. Victor Akujuru, Dr. Dagogo Cookey-Gam, and Engr. Frank Mbah expressed profound gratitude to God and the University for the honour and recognition accorded to them, describing the event as heartwarming and symbolic of RSU's commitment to celebrating loyalty and service.
Each retiree received a special gift from the institution, marking the ceremony as a memorable and historic moment in RSU's journey. The event has set a new tradition for the University, one that acknowledges the past, appreciates dedication, and inspires continued connection beyond years of service.
