Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World: Experts Raise Awareness During World Glaucoma Week 2025
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Rivers Chapter, led by Chairman Dr. Tamunokuro Diamond, has joined forces with the Society of Ophthalmology (SOC) and the State Executive Council (SEC) to commemorate World Glaucoma Week 2025. This year's theme, "Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World," emphasizes the need for collaboration among healthcare professionals, patients, and communities to combat glaucoma effectively.
Glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, affects approximately 80 million people globally ¹. The disease is often referred to as the "silent thief of sight" due to its gradual onset and lack of early symptoms. However, some symptoms may include peripheral vision loss, tunnel vision, halos around lights, eye pain or discomfort, and redness of the eye.
Several factors contribute to the development of glaucoma, including genetics, age, ethnicity, medical conditions, eye injuries, and long-term use of corticosteroids. Regular eye exams, medication adherence, laser treatments, surgical options, lifestyle changes, and awareness and education are crucial in preventing glaucoma and managing its progression.
World Glaucoma Week 2025 serves as a reminder of the importance of awareness, early detection, and treatment of glaucoma. By uniting efforts across various sectors, we can work towards a future with a glaucoma-free world.
