Rivers State Government Takes Proactive Measures to Tackle Flooding
The Rivers State Government, led by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has launched a comprehensive plan to address the devastating effects of flooding in impacted communities. The Orashi region, comprising Abua/Odual, Ahoada East, Ahoada West, and Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Areas, has been identified as the epicenter of flooding in the state ¹.
According to Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Rivers State Flood Prevention and Management Committee, Prof. Mrs. Ngozi Nma Odu, the region's rich biodiversity and fertile lands are under threat due to its location downstream from major dams, particularly those in Cameroon. The periodic release of water from these dams has become the primary cause of devastating floods ¹.
*Key Measures to Combat Flooding:*
- _Early Warning Systems_: NIMET will provide early warning systems to alert communities of potential floods.
- _Infrastructure Improvement_: Upgrading flood control systems, identifying elevated safe zones, improving drainage networks, and initiating intensive drain-clearing programs.
- _Community Preparedness_: Drawing from local knowledge and combining traditional methods with modern approaches to mitigate flood effects.
- _Diplomatic Efforts_: Engaging with relevant stakeholders to address trans-boundary water management issues.
The Committee plans to tour all 18 identified Local Government Areas to assess the impact of flooding and provide targeted support. Stakeholders have urged the government to find a permanent solution to flooding problems and requested relief materials to cushion the effects of flooding on farmlands ¹.
The Rivers State Government's proactive response has been applauded by the head of NEMA, Mr. Chidi Ogundu, who noted that the state government is the first to take such measures. Local Government Councils have also declared their readiness to tackle flooding challenges head-on ¹.
